Every January, Álamos changes its rhythm. For nine days, the squares, churches and stages of this Pueblo Mágico fill with opera, concert music and artists from Mexico and abroad during the Alfonso Ortiz Tirado Festival (FAOT), organized by the Sonora Institute of Culture.
The singing doctor
Alfonso Ortiz Tirado was born in Álamos on January 24, 1893. He studied medicine, graduating in 1919, and became a surgeon and professor at the UNAM School of Medicine while also being one of the most beloved tenors of his time. Among his patients was the painter Frida Kahlo.
From tribute to international festival
In 1984 a tribute in his memory was held at the Museo Costumbrista in Álamos. That modest gathering grew into one of the most important cultural festivals in northern Mexico, devoted above all to bel canto and also open to other musical genres and art forms.
The 42nd edition
The 42nd FAOT runs January 22–30, 2027. For this edition, the open call received a record 660 proposals from 69 countries, and 61 were selected for the artistic program.
